this is beautiful work - the scope of what is great photography extends beyond the narrow definitions of this site's collective. Very few photos on this site "stand out", make us feel. You've accomplished both.
Don't change because the collective demands it. My thought is if they don't like you here, you are very probably on the right path. |

This shot is one of the reasons I will probably never score well on dpchallenge. This is a great capture. The OOF hints that the adult may feel the boy's confidence may not be wholly earned - it adds a bit of surrealness to the shot - something true, but hard to believe. There is great congruency between the boy's expression, head & eye position and the title. You can put your bat and ball away. You've hit this one out of the park.
BTW-check out the comment from Posthumous - he don't give out ones like that very often.

But, to each his own....
You are absolutely right there.
BTW. That is a stunning image of the Owl with attitude. |

I feel all comments are helpful. It is someone else's thoughts, and I choose to place due value in each others thoughts. But, to each his own.... |

Too bad you can't find anything useful and helpful in comments that are also critical. Until you are self critical, you will find it hard to improve. Good luck to you. |

Thanks for the input, y'all, and I am taking off the cloak of sulkiness and bringing back my ball and bat.
.... and maybe there is some honor in being last... out of 444. We all have a different take on how we look at things and that's okay.
I am especially grateful for the momentousness of receiving a brown ribbon. Thanks, Yo, for pointing out how special it is!

I really liked this a lot. It got an 8 from me. I love the shallow focus and light. Couldn't care less about the grain. Great shot. |

One thing I learnt quickly on dpc is to know your audience. There are styles of photography that are favoured and so trying something a little quirky or 'different' is bound to be slated by some - and their entitled to do that, so there's no point getting a sulk on.
For me, as long as I'm enjoying photography, I don't mind if nobody 'gets' what I've done, but it is great when someone does, and it only takes one person. Of course it might be completely different for you, but keep going regardless.
For what it's worth, my initial reaction was similar to the majority who said "out of focus" etc. But having spent time and read a bit more about what you were trying to achieve, it puts the photo in a whole different light. So well done. |

Hey, I DID acknowledge the great look you captured. I have a brown ribbon entry that was clean, sharp and reasonably well lit, so don't worry too much about it. The brown ribbon is a special club that some members will never belong to.
Please leave the ball and bat, I want to hit a few now that I've gotten to the end of the challenge. |

Last place??? Wow!!!
It appears that the majority puts a heavily weighted emphasis on technical issues rather than getting the emotion impact of the image
Going for a different look here, the shallow focus is selective and is in the plane of the mouth and nose. It is not out of focus.
For the ones that don't get the composition, the rule of thirds isn't always necessary.

P.S. I do thank the ones who "got it". RianBotes' comment was dead on target. And actually, if you want to knock it to a 5 for technical or personal issues, I don't have a real problem
with that. It is just the 4 and below scores that seem over the top... or is it under the top?
Ah.... well ... maybe next time I can get in the top 425. That's my new DPC goal.

For me this is grainy, the focus isn't quite right and the colours seem a bit off. The composition is a bit odd too, it's neither filling the frame or leaving enough background to give context. |

Very close to being a stunning image. The level of saturation, the brightness, and the focus all conspire against this image for me. VERY cute kid, good composition, and the perspective is good......5 |

I love the look on the kid's face. Unfortunately, the overall quality of the image isn't coming off to me very well. High ISO graininess, inconsistent lighting, white balance is a touch yellowy. Not sure what to suggest. Sorry. |

i like how you have captured the gaze up, but the noise levels, the apparent white balance issues, and the apparent missed focus hurt the final product |

When I saw this pic...BLAHHHHH. I read the title and it suddenly spoke to me and the noise, the oof and slight blur and everything works. This has an audience but Im afraid they will be few and mostly ding your score into the ground. 7 - no 8 |

A little less grain and more light on the upper part of the face and you would have been golden. |

Seems a bit snapshot-ish to me. The colors seem to be a bit too harsh with a lot of grain, and the composition seems a little off the mark. Sorry to sound critical on this one... it just doesn't seem like a very compelling entry for a "best of" challenge. |
