Not sure of the 'gold leaf' significance? It maybe something very sacred but it's not very attractive for an image.

Interesting pic and subject. The background just take away to much attention from the statue face

While I'm certain there is a significance to the gold leafs here I'm afraid since I don't understand it, it just makes the shut a little untidy for me.

Also, your gold and red background is super strong, I think that would definitely benefit from being toned down a little.
