Challenge: Things That No Longer Work (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: Portfolio
Camera: Nikon D300
Lens: Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR DG IF-ED

Aperture: 4.0

This shot was set-up rather quickly as I stumbled across my old pocket watch in the desk drawer. The idea was a play on the theme of frozen in time (i.e. when the clock stops working it ceases to exist for the reason it was meant for, etc.) Anyway. I took two black pieces of foam post board, laid one of them on the floor and propped the second against the wall. I laid down the watch with the open hunter case and tried to position the chain to lead into the shot.

Used two flashes off camera both at 1/125 power. The SB-900 at about camera right (at about lens level) zoomed in slightly to focus the bean on the hunter case. Then the SB-800 was held directly above the watch to give the slight reflection on the post board. The lens was Tamron 90mm which was at a minimum aperture (in this case it was f4) to give a shallow DOF and which created a pleasant foreground bokeh from the chain. Appreciate any comments or suggestions for improvement. Thank you for stopping by everyone.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Initial impression: Very clean, professional-looking shot. Good work.

Technical: Appreciate the detail you put into explaining the set, helps me see what you planned to do. Really like the lighting, comp and the leading lines here. Surprised that you shot at 1/800 - quite fast for a stationary studio shot! Even handheld, with a VR reduction lens (I have the 18-200) at 1/60th you probably would have been fine in terms of focus.

Artistic: More of a straight studio shot than one endeavouring to tell a story. However, it's very straightforward and simple, and I strongly believe in less being more. And I'm not the only one who likes the chain emerging from dots of light :-)

Overall: Well done on a high finish in this challenge. I like the fact that you did very little if any pp. Keep doing what you're doing. And don't be afraid to put a tripod to work!

Feel free to pm me with any questions,

Susan

This is a great photo. However, my preference (and I think thats all it would be) would be to have more of a crop on your main subject, the watch.

Love the foreground bokeh and the nice blackness surrounding the watch.
