Challenge: Puzzle Macro III (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-50D
Lens: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro
Date: Dec 18, 2009
Aperture: f 22
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/60 sec
Date Uploaded: Dec 19, 2009

These are the read/write heads of an old computer hard disk. The reflective surface is the actual surface of the disk itself.
Taken with 3 Kenko Extension Rings.
2 flashes: on at an 45 degree angle from top/right, the other from the left at the height of the head to illuminate the small wires and the background as well.
I played quite a bit with the bright reflection of the top edge. At the end I liked the one with the bright reflection best. It adds contrast and a leading line into the picture as it grabs your attention.

Processing is simple:
raw conversion
remove dust
S/H
high pass
levels, curves
USM

I don't know what it is, but it looks pretty interesting. I like how there is a string of alternating colors on the one side, and some more pastel colors on the bottom side.

I thought of opening one of my old drives, I never did but I did see photos before. This would be even better if the resolution was higher, you must have cropped quite a bit to reach the close view?

Something metal with colours refracted in it. At first I thought it was tweezers or the top of a Christmas ornament. But now I think it's a hard drive from a computer.

I wonder how you managed to make the arm holding the magnetic head look almost transparent. Cool look!
