I absolutely adored the title of your free study entry -- the combination of the title and the photo were priceless!

7 for making me laugh, or scaring me, or both.

With the person on the right looking very weird, the photo seems awkward. I would have got it if the child looked scared. I think the intense flash could have added to that creepy look. But as the photo is currently, the elements just feel awkward and like it was an accident.

OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for the Mu (most underrated) award:

Positives: This is certainly a challenging image that makes us throw away our preconceptions of stereotypically captured moments like this. An image that is full of candour. The flat lighting serves to emphasise the and reflect the discomfort there is in viewing this image.

Critical stuff: All of the above - this isn't one for the wall!

Overall: An interesting and brave choice for the FS - one that actually makes me, the longer I look at it, begin to wonder about the real lives and circumstances of these people. It's funny - writing this comment and staying here long enough while I do that has given me enough time to appreciate the image. I really do want to know more about the context here. It took a while to bite but the hook is there!

I agree, the harsh forward facing flash is indeed a nightmare. Or is it the nonstop Christmas music? The best part of Christmas arriving is that the Christmas music will soon be over for another 10 1/2 months.
