This is my first submission - I've just been a gaper up until now.

I was strolling the back streets of Mardin one afternoon looking for interesting subjects. The area is rich with lots of opportunities; sometimes I see, sometimes I don't. I like this photo for it's plain simplicity and softness, it almost looks like a painting to me. I've done very little editing to this version and it seems the more I tried other options, the more harsh it looked.

Just curious what others think.

Thank you everyone for your comments and votes. All are actually helpful even if I didn't check the box. To me what I thought was a good shot and one that I like, is just average for most others.

The adjustments I made were minimal because I was concerned with it looking to harsh or fake. Apparently they weren't enough. Post processing is and has always been a weakness for me. I'm not sure what I need to do besides keep trying. Using a color calibrated monitor would also help, but I am traveling and can't take on the extra weight.

It wasn't first place and it wasn't last so I look forward to my next challenge.

too flat and dark. This would have been nice in B&W with some tonal adjustments.

It could be better by adjusting levels, curves, etc.

OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for my Mu (most underrated) award:

Positives: Thanks for offering this - I get the impression that this is the sort of corner of the world that people just walk through without really noticing, so thanks for reminding us to open our eyes and look. In that regard the title is perfect!

Critical stuff: Pretty much a reflection of what I said above... this is an ordinary scene and perhaps the low perceived intrinsic interest level will have voters walking by as they would in real life.

Overall: I appreciate the sentiment of capturing a simple space but in the final analysis, I'm not sure if that is enough.

I would like to see more of this scene, looks like there's a lot of potential here, but this shot in particular doesn't quite capture it I'm afraid.

I'm not sure.............
The stairs appear to lead somewhere, but we dont see where. I feel I am getting a fragment of the scene, and not the full view. The brown colours lack any real interest to make the scene trully stand out.

not a lot to hold my interest sorry
