for the september macro side challenge

used kenko 36mm extension tube ..
what i found so interesting about this beetle is the castanet looking things on stalks coming out from his head .. when i saw the fotos i'd taken of this beetle on the computer i noticed that one of them had opened up .. would love to know what they are and what they're for?

this shows it open ..

update .. i wrote to Nick Monaghan who is a photographer who specializes in insects and spiders and identifying them .. check out his site lifeunseen.com if you want to know what your insect actually is .. he is based in australia
part of his reply ..
"What an odd little beetle! I haven't seen one like it either, so I did a
quick check of one of my beetle books and found the name Elephastomus
gellarus
(sorry, no common name), which belongs to the family Geotrupidae.
Those things sticking out the side of its head are antennae and I am
guessing this might be a male. The males usually have larger and more
pronounced antennae of various shapes, which they use for detecting the
pheromones emitted by the females."

Wow I don't think I've ever seen one of them before. If you can pull these kind of creatures out of the firetrail now, wait until its really warm there!
