This is a brown, correction, juvenile black crowned night, heron, taken at a small lake in the suburbs near my house last week

Thanks everyone for your help with the bird identification

I think this is a immature black crowned nigh heron as well. I agree with the earlier comment on moving your angle up a bit to eliminate the tree in the background. Perhaps you could have opened your aperture up more as well. With f/2.8 on that lens I bet your could get some sweet bokeh.

Shape and posture looks a lot like a the green herons we have here in FL. The green herons have a cross-hatching on their wings though. Beautiful capture and composition.

Since I can't find 'Brown Heron' in my bird guides, I have posted a link to this photo in a WhatBird.com forum, asking if anyone can identify it.

I got an answer from my inquiry on WhatBird.com. Immature Black-crowned Night-heron. Here's a reference photo on the USGS web site. It's not nearly as good as yours though. :)

There are so many varities of herons that I haven't seen before so thank you for posting this one ... I love shooting herons as they have such a zen quality about them ... their patience when fishing is exceptional ... nice job getting so much detail.

I like this shot, I have not seen a brown heron before. If i were hyper- critical, i think if you had stood up on your tiptoes or up a wee bit higher somehow, you may have gotten all green around his head vs. the stick, would of helped him to pop even more. But, I do think it is a good shot. Nice details... hope to see more of this guy... if he is close to your house maybe we can see him with a fish in his mouth or something : )

Lovely detail and composition, I think his/her expression just about sums his/her feelings...on, no, not another photo shoot! Good capture.
