Challenge: Death II (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
Location: Waynesville, MO
Date: Jul 26, 2009
Aperture: f/16
ISO: 100
Shutter: 88 seconds
Galleries: Sky, Landscape
Date Uploaded: Jul 26, 2009

Photo was taken for the DPC "Death" challenge. I used a Gorilla Pod to place the camera on the roof of my car to gain this perspective. With the camera set to manual and RAW, I selected f/16, ISO 100, and 88" to gain maximum DOF, minimize noise, and bring out all available light as well as capture the movement of the clouds.

In post, using Adobe Lightroom 2.4, I added a small amount of warmth to the image. My tone settings were EV +0.17, Recovery 100, Fill Light +52, and Blacks 5; Brightness +50, Contrast +19. Clarity +67, vibrance +44, Saturation +40. Finally, I brought down the Red Saturation to -13, and brought up the Orange to +35 and Blue to +77 to really bring out the beautiful colors of this Missouri sunset.

Hi, i really loved this shot because of the nice effect on the sky. The 88" exposion add's so much to this shot, so as the colors of the sky.
I really would like to see more light on the graves, like the CC said down here. Probabbly a pp on them wouldn't be enough to make them more brighter, right?
Just a question, what about the aperture? Couldn't it be less then f/16?
Well, i'm not experient, but i think this is a nice shot, and with the graves a little brighter it would probably be on my favorites!
Nice job!

CC CLub here

1st Impression. I am immediately taken to the sunset adn that is drawing my eye, it actually took me a bit to see that there where grave stones in the shot. The sky is very dominant. The title is fitting though on this and does explain it. A tip that I have used at sunset when I am shooting from the top of my car. I turn on my fog lights or low beams ( and cover them with a white sheet , sometimes!))and it give you the fill light that is pretty delicate and illuminates , what in your case would be the front row of stones.

Your horizon is a little tilted so straightening that out would be a bonus. WOW I just noticed you used your shutter at 88 seconds that explains the clouds moving. I do not see any sharpening in your notes, that would have helped as well.

You did a great job on this and placed well, well done

Probably, IMO, one of the best cemetary shots. You've done more than just take a good shot of a graveyard. Your approach to this, and what you've done with the sky have have actually gone beyond and presented a concept, especially with the fitting title. Nice job.
