Challenge: Pigeons (Advanced Editing VII*)
Collection: Challenges 2009
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS
Location: Wiesbaden
Date: Jul 20, 2009
Aperture: f/6.3
ISO: 160
Shutter: 1/13
Date Uploaded: Jul 21, 2009

Oh dear. A challenge called "Pigeons". Well of course I have to enter it. I didn't get much time to chase pigeons this week, but I did get out twice. I went to the park where the pigeon lady feeds the pigeons on Friday, and did indeed catch her while she was there. I have a good shot of her. But she was yelling at me this time - usually she's friendly. Since my German STILL sucks, I don't know whether she was telling me to keep my distance from her birds, or not to take pictures, or what. So that kinda made me sad.

This one is, well, blurry. I like blurry pigeons. I've been known to shoot blurry pigeons in the past, and will probably continue to shoot blurry pigeons in the future. For some reason I quite like them. Liberal use of Topaz to bring out some color.

And according to the exif, I shot this yesterday. I don't remember that - I thought it was the day before.... Senility is setting in, I tell ya...

Very pleased with the comments - thank you very much! (Score I could do without, but hey, it's a calculated risk...)

Post Challenge: Excellent collection of sub-4 scores!

On the left is the pond; the "light" section is the cobblestone border around the pond; to the right-ish is the dirt/grass surrounding the pond. I'm walking along behind this guy, shooting as I go.
And per Steve's comment about "narrow minded voters" - nah, some people just don't like blur or abstract. And some people probably don't think this is even good blur or abstract. That's all OK. It's all subjective. (And Richard, I'll go back and look at the original - not sure why I cropped it this way - I suspect because of "distracting elements" or some such.)

I'm going to go out on a limb here (for fear of insulting you about one of your others) but I believe this is the best, best pigeon picture I've ever seen. Ever.
And I've looked at a lot (most of them are on my computer - he he he he).

I'm out searching my favorite 'haunts' looking for stuff for the Missed Focus challenge. I think this would work perfectly.

May I please have the name and number of the pigeon you used for this shot?

This is a really amazing photo! When I saw that it got 11 one votes, I just couldn't believe it. You were absolutely robbed in this challenge. I guess on the bright side, it did get a lot of 7, 8, 9 & 10 votes.

Deb,

This is a work of art and is sadly proof that DPC voters are trained to vote on most images that fit the niche on this site. I love this shot and will be adding it into my favs as soon as I finish typing this message to you.

Well done and sorry for the outcome, I would have given high marks if I had voted on this challenge.

Steve

An outrageous injustice! 5.2? Sheesh! Yeah, I know it's all subjective...blah blah blah...but I think the voters were clearly mistaken on this one. Should have been on ribbon row! BTW - I never gave a thought during voting that this might be yours! Duh!

It would appear the new breed of voters don't understand creativity in photography, this is brilliant Deb and deserved better.

Deb, this is absolutely stunning. I've been so busy this week that I didn't look at the pigeon submissions during voting - just catching a few in the Posthumous thread.

I totally love the flow and the colors - very, very beautiful. I'm amazed that you got a 5+ score. What's really cool are the tons of comments and the magnificent commenters' average - 7.9 - wow! Such an exciting image on all levels. Congrats!

Damn...I knew this was yours and almost voted just to give it a boost.

"Some will come around and just need a few shots like this to be spotlighted..."

Are you sure about that? Is the site lacking or void of voters with any imagination?

Do we need to call the people at Disney and get them involved?

I couldn't wait to see what you came up with for this challenge, and you did not disappoint! I also love blurry birds and this one is done just right! The only disappointment is that the voters didn't "get it". Grrr.

Oooooh, another beautiful pigeon shot! Too bad the voters don't embrace the blur. This is really wonderful. You are truly the master of the pigeons.

This should have been very near the top, IMO. Diff'rnt strokes for diff'rnt folks, as usual. It's just that some folks can't see, apparently. Good Stuff!

I figured this was yours Deb. I'm happy that you finished with the score that you did in spite of the harsh voters below 5.

Eleven 1's, Fourteen 2's, seventeen 3's . . . ??

Quite insane - too many narrow minded voters I'm afraid. People looking for clear cut absolutes instead of artistic interpretation apparently.

Deserved to be way highter.

Didn't see this during voting. Love the textured background, the beam of light highlighting the pigeon. Good stuff. I'm particularly pleased with the similarity of our images!

Nice impressionistic treatment. Beautiful patterns created by the motion blur. Love the way the bird is flying into the beam of light.

I really like this. The stripes of colour in the background ar great, although maybe a bit too bright near the top.

And if this isnt Deb, then its a good Deb style pigeon!

Too blurry for my taste. I'm more inclined to be impressed by a shot that freezes the bird in time while flying.
