Photographer’s Notes
In the words of an old Paul Simon song, “I think I’m in trouble here…” It’s June 29th and I have not shot a Free Study entry yet. Life has a way of intruding, in this case, with the untimely demise of the hard drive in my PC. It should be simple to reimage a PC, but it’s not. And it shouldn’t take very long, but it does. I lost two weeks in the process.

I took a couple of neat motorcycle road trips during the month but I carry only a P&S on these, and the results are rarely up to DPC standards. Our house is up for sale, so we’re busy with real estate matters. And in fact, that was what inspired this photo.

My wife put most of her house plants in the garage so the house wouldn’t be messy for showings. In the garage, they are neglected and because of (or in spite of) this neglect, one of her orchids began to bloom. Passing through the garage, I noticed it and decided to shoot it.

Flowers are not that easy to shoot and white orchids are an unforgiving lot on so many levels. My first attempt using manufactured light was a disaster. So I got up early this morning and shot it with natural light from a west window just after dawn. The results seem more pure to me.

I hope other lyrics from that same Paul Simon song don’t apply here:
The Boy’s got brains, he just don’t use ‘em, that’s all.
The boy’s got brains, he just refuse to use ‘em, that’s all.
The boy’s got brains, he just abstains.

Very pretty, good lighting. Wish the bottom weren't cut off.

your flower is in excellent focus, but the shot makes me want to see more of the flower...it is like it is to tight in the cropping/framing
