 The lighting was a major factor here; I found this old barn, the sun was just about to set, yet the gold, warm light was hitting the side wall, coming in straight through the window. One section of the window was patched with a piece of nylon and that helped a lot diffusing the light.
As far as editing I did some cloning on the face to remove few red spots, a mild sharpening and after applying a 20% Gaussian blur I converted it to Sepia.
The relatively large aperture (f4.0) yielded enough depth of field for a clear face yet blurred some of the details in the background.

Thanks a lot for your nice comments. The photo seems to have been very well received, both technically and artistically on different media, including iStock. The sepia toning makes a huge difference, this is definitely one of those photos requiring desaturation before anything else; the other elements make the powerful composition.

this is well done...I like the tones that you have in the shot and your focus with the dreamy effect is really good
