I haven't had much opportunity to get out and take pictures the past few months, as I have been rather busy with work, so I was most pleased to spend an evening with another DPChallenge member (Laurie Maybury, aka "tosk") taking pictures in the downtown core of Ottawa.
Laurie had been asking me about how one goes about balancing the natural and artificial light in taking pictures of illuminated buildings at dusk. The Supreme Court is relatively close at hand to where the Mayburys live, so it became the teaching subject for the evening.
Since Laurie was a little constrained in lens choice at the wide end of the spectrum, she set up well out on the lawn with the classic straight-on symmetrical view; I decided to try this closer in shot from an oblique angle with "Mongo," my 14-24 ultra-wide. It is a bit constrained due to a rather ugly smokestack to the left of the building that I've managed to hide behind the building; unfortunately, there are a couple of street signs that are noticeable in the shot.
At any rate, I figured I'd enter into the Free Study for comments and feedback. I don't think the shot is anything special; in fact, this being the first time I've photographed the Supreme Court, I now have ideas for when I revisit the site.
I don't know how this will place. I'm hoping for high 5's and better than 60%, but given past performance, I expect 5.35 and 40%.

I like the wide angle here. Would like to have seen a bit more shadow detail in the rooftop. Nice tones all around though. |

The partial view of the flag pole is distracting. Beautiful colors, nice crisp well-focused shot though |
