This is a great blue heron that was sitting on the pier. Luckily, he had an itch behind his head and just finished scratching and was in the process of straightening back up. I'd never seen the feathers on the head standing up like this!

I'm excited about the shot, and I'm hoping that it will do really well. I'm worried that people will think that object needs to be an inanimate object, or that great blue herons (gbh's in my family) aren't unusual enough. But he sure looked unusual that day!

He definitely has an unusual pose going! He almost looks like he's lit from underneath - those front feathers are almost glowing, which is really quite striking. I suspect scorewise folks didn't think a bird was all that unusual of an object.

Fun hair-do and odd pose. Too bad the focus didn't come out sharper.

I have a lot of trouble getting tack sharp focus with my 70-300 lens too, unless I use a tripod. I am disappointed in the image stabilization, because wildlife is why I bought the lens, and I don't use a tripod for that. However my top rated photo, with a yellow ribbon, was taken with that lens using a tripod, so it is capable of good things.

My eye keeps being drawn to the eye...but the facial area is out of focus...as is raised foot...which is really distracting. Plus, I think people were looking for something out of the ordinary, subject wise.

wish your bird was a bit sharper in focus
