Looking at the comments and scores on this tells me something very important: DPCers are spending faaar to little time looking at a picture which they intend to score harshly. In my opinion, if you're going to give a low score, you ought to at least study the picture for some time first to be sure there's not an element you're missing or that you haven't drawn a negative conclusion too quickly. Why am I saying this? Many votes and comments on this photo were based around the fact that something appeared uneccisarily cruel and tasteless. Apparently, few seemed to notice the thing that was taking up 1/4 of the page: quality hunting garb, surely not bought cheap for the sake of a DPChallenge. The bullet hole is in the deer's neck, a precise shot meant to down the deer without suffering. Obviously, the man is a practiced hunter. The timeframe in which the photo was shot (Nov 3) is prime hunting season. The cut made to the deer, at the main blood supply arteries, was done obviously in order to bleed the deer and prepare it for proper butchering. So why do we seem to think he killed the deer for the sake of being sick for a photograph? Are we that dense that we can't put large, obvious puzzle pieces together and draw a likely conclusion, or are we that pessimistic that the obvious reasonable conclusion isn't a dark enough reason to settle on? It seems far more likely that he had the camera with him when preparing a kill for butchering for meat (very healthy, very natural, very delicious, as discussed by others, below). Shame on you for not giving the photo just consideration before drawing irrational conclusions! Yes, quality-wise, the photograph could have been better, but a 1, a 2, a 3?
-He was obviously NOT taking the picture to be morbid. It's something he does often enough to have quality gear and a precise aim.
-The deer was shot in a careful manner to prevent suffering.
-The deer is being cut for food, not for sport.
So what's so yucky about it all?
Would you like your photographs treated with such unconsidered pessimism?

I'm astounded by this. I know I'm coming back almost two years later, but you guys are ridiculous. 48 votes for a 1 rating. Viewing the comments, I can see it was because of the subject matter and the act being committed. I wonder how this photograph would've been rated different if you didn't view it as wrong and evil. I'm ashamed in all of you. This website was made to share the art of photography, not your personal views on hunting. To be honest, I'd much rather go shoot a deer and get 100 pounds of meat for the price of one round (a few cents). Then go pay $3/lb for some "high" quality, chemical processed beef. |

After reading all the comments, it comes to me that there are many different types of people here. One thing I am seeing is, alot of people go on the merit of the photo (technical, etc.), while others only go on a moral issue. I agree with it being a little dark, but it being in the superstitions challenge...PERFECT, because that is what it is. To me, if it causes a little emotion, along with being a good photo...I like it even more! I'd given ya a seven!!

Wow, I have to say I'm disappointed at the negativity of some of the comments as well. I liked this photo and what it was going for. I did think it was a bit dark and not as crisp as it could have been. But overall I liked it, and I thank you for sharing it. (I gave it a 7 by the way) |

I took off some points for it being a tad dark and a tad out of focus, but I thought it was a great shot. While I'm not a hunter, I understand the true nature of the food chain and our place in it, as well as a deer's place. My first thought when I saw this was "Yum!"
But that's just me :) |

Wow, I knew I would get some negative comments on this photo, but never did I think I would hear things like, "Hope someone does the same to you to take a picture". Sheesh, that's pretty unbelievable! I mean, lets keep this in perspective here. While I love in animals, and I don't condone cruelty to animals, this deer is just that, an animal. And your wishing ill on a human being! Get a grip! Anyway, I did not kill the deer just to take a picture. Neither did I drink the blood as I am not superstitious. However, I am an avid hunter and venison is a normal part of our diet around here. It's better for you than any meat you'll buy in the store. No preservatives, no additives, no growth hormones, nothing but free range 100% natural meat as it was meant to be. If you thought this was cruel, please understand that you are simply misinformed. If you want suffering, try visiting a slaughter house where commercial meat is processed. Those animals suffer 100 times as much. I won't go into the grusome details, you can easily look those up on the web. This deer was allowed to live a free and happy life, and when I harvested her, this deer was taken instantly with little or no suffering. Not to mention the fact that it is ABSOLUTELY necessary to harvest the deer. If we do not harvest them, they will become overpopulated and when the food supply runs dry they begin to starve to death and spread disease. Trust me, there is nothing sadder than seeing a heard of deer that looks more like a pack of wild starving dogs that look completely emaciated, many with sores on their body. Taking the deer is a necessary and healthy practice. Do some research, and you will see that what I say is true. If anyone condems me for being cruel, that is your right. But, you had better throw out all of your leather goods and become a vegetarian. Otherwise, your being hippocritical. I am sure some, if not many, gave me a lower score because they were disturbed by this photo, and that's to be expected. But it is a photo depicting one of the worlds oldest superstitions that can be found in many different cultures. I would like to thank those that put aside their personal feelings and critiqued this photo honestly. Thank you. I definately learned a thing or two. As for the comment about the dress and a woman, heh, no it's not either. The man in the pic is me, and the dress is a camoflaged rain pancho. There is red in the pancho because it's a fall type of camoflage from sweden called swedish alpenflage. I tried to desaturate the photo so only the blood was red, but there were too many red tones (my skin, the coat, the deers fur, etc.. ) in the photo and I could not get all of the red tones out. I think it might have been a better photo had I achieved the effect I was looking for. I also tried boosting the saturation on the red, but left it out at the last minute. I wish I would have left if a bit lighter... so it would stand out more.. thanks for the comments everyone.. ~jeff

Pretty good composition and sharpness, but the whole image seems a bit dark and flat (at least on my monitor) - would have liked to see this lighter or with a bit more sontrast and a little more saturation. |

I'm sure you might be setting a record for comments with this one. I do not have a problem with it. I've heard of the "drink the blood of your first kill tradition" but I don't know if this is what you were going for. The picture is too dark. Not a terribly big deer either. How'd you get her to sit so still? - Inspzil |

Sicko, Yuck. Ole my gauld. Obviously an urban legend of manhood. Wonderful picture only wish it had been a little lighter. More light would have made it a 9, but as is it is an 8. I really do like the picature. |

This is a brave picture to submit. I bet you get some bad comments because of the subject matter. I find it a strong image and well executed. |

Not very appealing. The fact that the man is wearing camouflage tells me he's a hunter. I might have found the picture more appealing if the "ritual" was performed by a native. I dunno. Just doesn't work for me. Looks more like a snap shot. 3 sorry. Jacko. |

I find it sad that someone has to take another life to make himself feel stronger. All life is sacred and should not be treated as a trophy. And you didn't even spell spirit right. |
