 I love to chew licorice once in a while and searching for texture, I noticed this dried out piece, still lying on my desk. To make it stand alone I used a mushroom. Then I put it in front of an old book and lighten it with a normal flashlight. I like the way the composition came out, but had a hard time getting it sharp. I took about at least 60 shots and none came out real sharp. Must have been the lack of light and handheld camera (don't have a tripod yet). Oh well, I'm sure I'll get bashed again over the quality imperfection, but I get used to that. Always loose a lot of detail by resizing it to 640.

Post processing: curves, layers (the ones that don't contain pixels), cropping, brightening, sharpening, a bit of saturation.

I like your choice of dof and bg. A little fill light from camera right would bring in more detail in the darks of the "licorice". It's an upside down mushroom right?

An interesting choice for meeting the subject challenge - very abstract and different. The image could be a little more dramatic. A little more focus would have helped this image score higher. A good, solid entry into the challenge.

very cool. it definitely looks like a standing person looking to the left with their arms folded underneath a robe. i like the tones and feel of this image

at first glance of your shot I think it is a statue (a hairy one I might add)...until I scroll down...very nice
