Challenge: 1-Second Exposure (Advanced Editing VII*)
Location: My basement, Mineapolis, MN, USA
Date: Mar 22, 2009
Aperture: f/11
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1 sec
Date Uploaded: Mar 22, 2009

I was hoping for something more interesting and mind-bending than this but this was the best I got. I predict the voters won't care for it at all since it's a bit disturbing to look at, but hey, what the heck... let's see what happens. I predict it will score in the 4s.

This was shot with a snooted flash on each side of her face. She looked at one, we fired the flash, she looked over to the other and we fired that flash. Each flash lit one half of her face independently at different moments. 1 second was just enough time to get two separate flash bursts within the same exposure with time to move her eyes. She was able to keep her head in one place and just move her eyes so you don't notice any other movement. If you cover half of her face and look at each side independently it looks quite normal. Looking at both together is just plain creepy and disturbing.

She's normally an adorable girl with beautiful eyes. She got a kick of the trick.

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm realizing that, while it was a fun technical experiment, it really bothers me to look at it. It's just unsettling and unpleasant. For that reason I plan to remove it shortly after the challenge completes. I'll leave it up for a few days in case anyone is interested in the execution. Thanks for coming along with me on the experiment.

It looks like I can't delete an image that was in a challenge. Are there any secrets for deleting a challenge image? It's not a big deal but it's just hard to look at so I wouldn't mind deleting. Any help would be appreciated.

While the set up and colours are great I find the image a bit disturbing and pointless. Otherwise it meets the challenge and is very well executed... 6 for these reasons

This is an excellent idea.
i guess, two flashes on two sides of the face...fired one after another during the exposure. obviously the kid needs to be looking towards the flash (that must have hurt :P) when it fires. i like this.
