This shot was taken in Hawaii at Kilauea. I am not sure if you can still get this close at this was taken in 2002. At that time, you could get extremely close and as I recall this was within about 10 feet of the flow. It flows very slowly so there was no real danger... as long as you stayed alert. It was quite warm and the sulphur smell was very strong, but quite amazing to see.

I have received many comments on this one and will post an updated photo with a bit more pp once voting is done. Thank you for all the comments!

HERE is the slightly more processed photo.

Wow, I've never seen lava up close, that must be scary! I think if it were a little sharper it would pop more.

Great contrast with the glowing cracks, escaped flow and the black cooled lava on top. Hope this was with a good telephoto - don't think you'd want to misstep up close.

Wow - how close were you to the lava! Very interesting shot. Might have needed a little more PP to bring out the textures more but still a good picture.

Certainly a very unique picture, but there's seems to be no real subject, apart from red lava.

I like how the molten lava appears to be moving forward, although I'm guessing at a very slow rate.

Cool colors in the lava. Nice capture. Would have liked the point of focus to be on the lava - or at least just a little more in focus. Could you have zoomed in a little closer to it? I dont know how far away you were or if you could have even gotten any closer though. Nice shot - 5

THAT'S interesting! Something I may never see in person. Think you could have cropped out the horizon on the top for even more impact.

Daring to get that close to lava!

Really cool image. I really like the monochromatic look with the exception of the lava. I would have probably up contrast a bit to bring out the colors.

SSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

bringing the crop down to cut off the horizon would have brought this "closer" to the viewer IMO

I like the shot and all but feel making the surrounding black land darker might have made the molten lava pop more. Kudos to you for getting so close :)

Amazing, i like how the lava(?) is trying to reach this thing that looks like a fosil it seems like it is stretching to reach it, you made it look alive 10

They thought they knew what it was all about. It was simple geology. Molton rock under pressure in the deeps of the earth, being pushed to the surface, and finding whatever means it could to escape.

Perfectly natural, they said.

They couldn't have been more wrong.

One day, the evil force that kept pushing to escape its confines and prison in the darkest places of our planet would be free, and its reaching fingers of fiery death would destroy us all.

Another finger moved ever so slowly towards that day, and this time it eventually burned out, cooled too quickly. Today was not that day.

No, but it was coming.
