 I took this photograph from Botmaskop - a low mountain next to my home town in South Africa. This was shortly after I got my first SLR, and I so wished I had a better lens, but I had to make do with my 18-200mm at F/5.6. Still, I'm plesed with the result, and it made my top pick due to its special significance and rarity! (Comets don't pass by every day!)

Thanks for all the fun, and constructive criticism, dpchallenge!

Very little editing: Rotate, white balance, crop, cloned a small cloud out of bottom right corner, gamma, resize.

Besides being a great capture with high technical marks I find the photograph soothing but yet interesting. The slender of our universe always has a way of making us feel small in comparison. On the artistic side I find this photograph appealing to look at with it negative space and blending contrast of colors. The comet flowing and fading tail draws my eye back to the subject before my eyes have time to wonder away from the beauty. Very nice work and a bump from a 7 to 9.

I'm still chewing on my sour grapes over this one, I watched every night hoping to just get a glimpse of this one as it rounded the sun, nothing, nada... then it goes below the northern hemisphere horizon and BANG! What a show it puts on down under. Congrats, this is a beautiful shot!

This is unarguable cool!!!!! Wish I'd seen it! Cloud looks like an island in a warm sea, but there's no horizon. Adds mystery to the photo.

I haven't seen a comet like the one when I was in grade school - I did not realize how rare it was to get a good look at one. This is a nice capture (over an island?).

I know its one of those "wow" things to the photographer but picture wise I think for me its to drab and a little uninteresting. To much negative space. Sorry.
