Challenge: Hidden Gem -- 1,000th Challenge! (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: Hocking Hills State Park Ohio
Date: Oct 9, 2005
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/250
Date Uploaded: Mar 10, 2009

One of my most commented on shots. Shot quite some time ago with my Sony 717. It was a case of not seeing the "forest through the trees" - as I was trying to get a shot of the falls (Cedar Falls in Hocking State Park, Ohio) and kept thinking "I wish that group of women would get out of my way!" Finally thought "oh, duh" and took the shot. It was a Kodak POTD and was on Times Square for a day, so we'll see how dpc'rs like it.

The title comes from the separation in the water fall, the separate culture of the Amish and the one girl looking away and appearing somewhat separate from the group.

Enjoy!

Good shot. One idea is that one of the subjects jumps in would score really well. Could be with or without clothes. That would be a fun shot. Looks cold though.

Well captured and presented. I like that there's some mystery here ... the people seem out of place - dress and posture - what's going on. Well done!

Interesting shot. The image has a good blend of lights and darks... I'm not sure the b&w treatment is the best for this though....

Back to comment and bump: Hocking Hills I believe. In itself, this water fall is much more interesting with a long exposure time (blurred water) but capturing these young ladies is far more interesting than the waterfall ever could be in itself. B&W is also a must for this image, as the people would be less of a focal point if in color. Nice job. 9

what a great contrast of elements, toning really adds also

Certainly a contrast, I love the bonnets they are wearing. It seems a bit soft, taken with a long zoom maybe?

Mennonites in sneakers. There is such a story here, such multiple stories of acceptance and denial. To echo Wallace Stevens, six women at a waterfall are one woman at six waterfalls. 10

A charming photograph made all the more wonderful by the modern sports shoes. The image combines several lovely themes; the anachronism of the shoes versus the rest of the costume; the rock and the water, signifying time; and the puzzle of the one girl looking in the 'wrong' direction, signifying (to my fevered imagination) temptation. Plus its a beautifully rendered B&W photograph, which is always a pleasure. 9.

Makes me wonder what her attention is focussed on, whether she sees something out of the frame or whether she's lost in her own inner world. Intriguing moment to capture.

More focus would have nailed this one a ten from me. I love the ladies in sneakers and those hats and how it looks like they dont really belong. hahaa. Just needed more focus on them. You should have asked them all to stay still for one second while you took the picture. hahah. I would have!
