Challenge: Centered Composition (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: backyard
Date: May 16, 2004
Aperture: 3.5
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/90
Galleries: Still Life, Floral
Date Uploaded: May 16, 2004

Taken this afternoon (5/16/04) with my new 10D and the 24-70 2.8 lens. I just did a crop, levels, adjust the saturation a bit, made the border and saved for web.

I know it's off-center a bit (focus point is the right-most flower) and will probably lose MAJOR points but I wanted to include the maturing pomegranate fruit next to it. This would have done better in the opposites challenge but I just was anxious to get an image from the 10D in a challenge.

Well, it wasn't the brown......

Well, this is way after the challenge, so I don't know if you'll see this, but...

When I'm thinking "centered composition", my eye first moves to the center of the image. In this shot, I see nothing in focus in the center. Off to one side is a flower. To the other side is a pomegranate bud. In the middle - nothing. Another thought: If I'm looking for something as being a "centered composition" - or even "off-center composition", I sort of want to see the subject stand out from its background - preferably with some negative space to focus attention to the subject. That's also missing from this picture - everything sort of blends together.

Hope that helps.

Wow, I really REALLY took a beating on this one, didn't I? Oh well, like everyone said in their comments, it wasn't centered despite both the flowers and pomegranate fruit occupying the center of the frame. I guess the subject needs to be very obvious and I admit I do deduct points for the photo not matching the challenge or if the title does not fully represent what the title implies.

Do any of you think you would have voted higher if you thought of both the flowers and the pomegranate as one single subject? I'm very curious. :)

Many thanks to those who voted 5 and higher (especially those two 8s)! :)

Nothing is centered. You should have zoomed in (and centered on) that bizzare "bulb" on the right instead. But make sure you have enough light.

Leaf in centre too blurred to be the subject of the photo

nice picture, but it doesn't seem to belong in this challenge

As much as I hate to say it, I not really seeing the centered composition in this photo.

its not hard to get your main subject in dead center... this is centerED, but not dead center.

Good composition that I don't believe meets the challenge theme and appears to suffer from distracting highlights and motion blur.

The dead center of the photo is the negative space in the middle without flowers.
