Thank you all for your comments.
This is indeed a tradition in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland. A huge bonfire where the local firedepartment controls the fire and are ready to put it out if something happens. The fiest is always held the first weekend in August.

Yowsers - what a conflagration. Buckets seem a little small to be fighting such a blaze...

... and it suddenly became clear to the Mayor of that small burg that perhaps it was no longer sufficient to have a Volunteer Bucket Squad.

He sighed. So much for his Morning Donut budget.

I'm hoping to leave comments on as many photo's in this challenge as possible... out of (currently) 1124 images, I gave 31 of them a 9. Your image was one of those 31.

In amongst a bunch of landscapes, portraits, sunsets, bug macros, this really is one of a kind. An incredible action shot, and one I'm sure was uncomfortable to capture - I know how far the heat from these inferno's can reach out. Fire is such a beatiful thing to look at but so destructive. I think you have perfectly captured both sides in this image.

Good luck for a strong finish in this challenge.

You ask yourself is it actually worth using buckets on a fire like this...

Love the almost silhouette of the firemen here, the bright flames at the top grab my attention first then I look downwards.

So much detail here, I've been looking at it for a while.

Well done, 9
