For those interested the girl was in Gondor, Ethiopia.

This little girl was sitting in a market selling charcoal. She was filthy dirty, chewing on a stalk of sugar cane and had a radiating smile. Every time I look at the picture I pause and ponder where joy comes from. The girl obviously had nothing materially but yet still found happiness in the midst of hardship. It is a life lesson that I am consistently reminded of living in Africa.

So where was this taken?
My Comment:
Superb portrait of this young African boy chewing on a piece of sugar cane. I am almost sure this was taken somewhere in Natal, South Africa. On the south Coast there, maybe around Illovo or Issipingo.
Of course the worlds largest producers of sugar cane are Brazil and India so this shot could just as well have been taken in Brazil somewhere as they also have a large African population.7

Certainly a hidden gem. What a bright smile. The reflections in the eyes almost burn the retinas of the viewer. Wonder what that plant is.... The first marshmallow came from a plant that looked much like that in the Nile delta. I love your composition and the various color contrasts. Excellent!
