10-week old Yellow Lab, joined the family just this past Friday. Our 2-year old Chocolate Lab was jealous that he got to be featured in this challenge. ;-)

Outtakes below.

As CNovack pointed out, the contrast between background and Ranger wasn't enough ... which I realized after my first "sitting". So I changed it up using a dark brown throw. In the end, I liked his classic portraiture pose in the one I entered versus the more prop-induced looks in the outtakes.

Also wanted to bump contrast on this one a bit but couldn't without violating Basic Editing rules. I've a more heavily processed version for my own use that I may post later, with vignettes and greater contrast.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments and excellent critical feedback; much appreciated.

Really beautiful puppy - and well captured here. After looking at your outtakes I almost think the color version would have provided a bit more contrast of the pup and the background.

Cute shot of this puppy! Nice pose..I like that slight tilt to the head as if he is giving the camera a curious stare. Lighting is good and focus is good. We see many lovely details in the way the light plays on the fur and the texture of the fur. The eyes have some nice twinkle in them from reflected light. First reaction from looking at the thumbnail was that puppy looks like Marley from the 'Marley & Me' book (a great read and enjoyable book btw):-) While the pose, lighting and focus are great the B&W tones need just a little more boost to make them more dynamic and stand-out. Also the muted tones of backdrop does not allow Ranger to visually pop off the page - In the B&W his fur has more lighter shades so a direct contrast would be darker tones or black that would give the composition more visual pop.

One of the few that looks like more than a snapshot. I might play with levels and curves, but still.. nicely done. Great focus on his/her eyes. What a cutie.
