I like the original picture  , maybe because I often see similar pictures like this at work (confocal microscope) and thought i'd do this as it's possibly one of those that most people would not do, and one that I found facinating. Also in the process I discovered the photographer of the original ([user]12611[/user]) has some fantastic photos!
An idea I had while taking a nice shower was to use my white scrungy! I took 5 images of the scrungy on the floor (with black cloth background), with different lighting positions (above and the 4 sides), and then merged the jpgs together in PSE as different layers, making each visible using the 'screen' mode for each layer, and turning the above top image a strong green hue, and the side images a slightly less saturated reddish colour (not in the original, but gave my picture more punch). Each layer was sharpened and levels adjusted, the layers flattened, and then cropped to the final image (with a slight border added).
