the voting in this challenge was strange. I thought this was a cute shot! Love the happy face. I need to give this one a big old hug. Should have finished higher!

I like the focus on the nose and mouth - as cosprenks says - this is exactly how we see the pooches when they're in our faces. In fact, when I'd take a pic like this of my old doggie - that nose would soon be right on my lens if I kept pointing without petting! DOF is fine to me - and I really like how the background is all dark around his head. Fun shot!

On camera flash doesn't help this image.
Try to ues a more imaginitive lighting setup. Either try to get your flash off your camera, or use window lighting or a reflector to make things more interesting and softer.
