| Odd lighting on this, or maybe it's the weathered wood? The bottom half is so much brighter than the top half, and it doesn't look like shadows. |

In the sense that both images are abandoned residential structures, you are responding to the challenge. You're taking a very different approach (the whole vs a detail) that may or may not be an improvement. Technically this one's far superior, the original was a mess, so that's a plus.
Speaking of this image's merits independent of "deja vu" considerations, I am wishing you had taken the effort to even out the lighting on the top a little bit, and the cropping is uncomfortably tight for me. The B/W conversion is very nice. A 6 for now. |
