I discovered this fresh deer carcass in a small patch of woods in the middle of a residential area near where I live.

At the time I was looking for an image to meet one of this weeks challenges. This seemed to fit.

Best I could tell, the injury that caused its death was a broken and torn away lower jaw. You can see the tongue wrapped around the half of the jaw that remained. I suspect it may have run into a car and, based on the amount and location of blood, bled out and died where it lay.

In the original color image, the brown fur and blood made for a striking contrast against the freshly fallen snow but it may have proven to be a bit ghastly for those uncomfortable with the idea that life is temporary and death is natural and mother nature can appear a cruel bitch.

The pine branch and needles at the lower right, suggested to me, a signature. The eyeball almost seems to be looking at the pine branch as well. A nod, if you will, to the creator.

I'm guessing this won't end up winning any ribbons (with the possible exception of the brown)

God works in mysterious ways. And he's way smarter than I.

Either way, you're all invited over for stew at the conclusion of voting.

Ok it's a dead 'something'. Very difficult to make out what it is though. Maybe a contrast boost would bring out some of the details better.

Remains mysterious what I'm looking at here. I try to figure it out, but I don't make it. I see an eye and something like teeth. Curious what the solution is.

I think I'm glad I can't really tell what this is. I see an eyeball and teeth, but fortunately, can't make out what it is. An ending, indeed.

Powerful image that has been brilliantly portrayed and executed. A true masterpiece of contemporary photography displaying full control and grasp of aspects like composition and tonal range. The title too is well thought out and compliments this photograph and the challenge theme.

I have a hard time making out whats going on in this picture. I can tell that its something dead, but what exactly is vague. I think it would be better zoomed out a bit or with different contrast. That's my two cents.
