Kari Ann - many thanks for you critique here and you have picked up on the main thing that is lacking in this shot - the DOF in relation to the composition. I did do a slightly better version that at least was better composed for f/4:
But I had cloned out a power pylon and hadn't received the nod from SC before my submission deadline. I wouldv'e sought clarification before then but only became nervous because of a forum thread I had read - I should've stuck to my guns and stayed with my original.
However, the DOF problem remains in both versions. Getting access to this tree when it is wet is a bit of a challenge - both shots are done with me out of the sunroof of my 4X4 which is sat in a flooded area of the adjacent road; I'd have to trespass to get a better vantage point (the fence and adjacent farm building are out of shot). I wish it had been foggy AND wet on that day, I'd have then been sorted! - see one from a foggy day below:

This is Kari Ann, greetings from the Critique Club:
composition: good composition wise, the tree falls nicely in the rule of thirds.
color: gives the image a bit of an IR feel being in black and white
contrast: more contrast between the background and the tree in the foreground would have worked better IMO (and as others have stated)
focus: (see below)
depth of field: either a different angle or a more dramatic approach to the image would justify the use of the f4.0, here the background is too distracting to the eye, and the slight blur makes it even more annoying.
lighting: lighting is ok, but a bit on the flat side, maybe a more pronounced sky would have helped break up the white sky
other: I left the focus empty for a reason, mostly because I feel that the image has no real focus. The trees in the background severely compete with the main tree, and even though the main tree is in focus, its lost in a sea of slightly OOF trees. i have viewed your portfolio many a time, and feel this is not one of your more focused shots. Try revisiting this spot and seeing what else you can come up with, because i know this spot has potential, it just needs a little push for it to get there. i hope this was more constructive than mean, because thats what im trying to do, help others to help myself. | very, very nice tree, however, the background seems too busy. There's not enough contrast between the tree and the background to make it stand out enough so it gets a little lost in the photo |

| oh i love the texture in the wood, very pretty. i know you cant control this, but i love the water surrounding the tree also. it makes the tree look taller:) i might have done some burning on the branches |

| Think the B/W colors are to boring. Would have been nice with some more dynamic in the colors. |
