 Just bought a DSLR and was taking lots of shots of everything to try all the different settings. Particularly like being able to achieve this type of portrait with no background focus, so took lots of photos with the telephoto lens and f-stop as low as it would go. This is my daughter who I could not with all sorts of encouragement including lollies, get to look at the camera or smile.

My own comments about the quality of the image would be that I need to invest in a fill in flash to have less exposure on the body and more exposure of the shaded face and that the hat is the sharpest point of focus rather than the face itself.

Post processing, just adjusted the white point, balance, a little extra saturation, sharpened it a little and converted from raw to Jpeg.

It will be interesting to see if over time she retains that trait. For now, the main focus seems to be on the hat rather then her face.

A reflector to bounce some light back on her face would brighten this up a bit.
