Taken in the company warehouse. Our building is very old (built in the '30s). It has a lot of interesting photo subjects but this was my favorite out of all the pictures I took. Below are the steps I took in Photoshop:

1. Rotate 90ยบ CCW.
2. Crop image.
3. Auto color balance.
4. Adjust levels to darken a bit.
5. 10% USM.
6. Selected a small border and inverse.
7. Sampled color off the extinguisher and set opacity to 30%.
8. Brushed the color into the selection.
9. Save for web.

Thank you for your comments, Amanda! Sorry I didn't get around to reading them until now as I was out of town in New Orleans. I was busy there, however, taking over 130 photos and some of which are posted in my portfolio already.

The border color does look red here but I will try what you suggested and change the brush properties next time. While I made the border, I didn't think of the consequences of applying a highly opaque color against a white background. I know it's obvious but it just didn't click with me at the time.

I totally agree with you on the distortion of the bricks and that's a trait I cannot fix as it lies with the lens. I would LOVE to retake this with my 10D (and my new tripod) in the future and I hope to do it one day. The 718SH just isn't sturdy enough to hold the 10D in any sideways position.

As for the number of comments the photo received, I just hoped for a higher score based on what was said. But, personally, I am very happy with the photo despite its flaws and hopefully the one I take with the 10D will be much better.

Thanks again, Amanda!

Greetings from the Critique Club!

First of all, I really enjoyed this pic during the challenge. It's a shot you should be proud of.

Composition: I think this is one of the strongest points of the picture. The far-right centering gives a lot of interest to an otherwise mundane subject. There is some issue with the border. I like the translucency, but the low opacity on top of the white does make the red lighter, hence pink. Maybe if you set the brush to "darken" or "soft light" instead of "normal" you could keep the texture with a more vibrant red color. I do like the inclusion of the border. The wall could go on and on for feet, but the border helps define the realm of the picture.

Technical: Personally, I like the shadowing on both the extinguisher and the wall. I don't think it's too dark; as you said, it helps show off the texture of the brick. It also gives it photo some mood- it's not a catalougue shot of a fire extinguisher. The bricks are quite distorted, especially on the bottom edge. However, the extinguisher seems to line up for the most part with the right hand border, which fools the eye a little.

Appeal: With 25 comments, you can see that people had a very strong reaction to this photo, whether good or bad, and that in and of it self speaks of the sucess of the photo. It's not middle of the road.

Great job!
Amanda

Thanks to everyone who voted on my entry. I'd like to address some issues that were raised.

1. The distortion that some people mentioned is (most likely) barrel distortion which is a serious issue with the 717.

2. This was taken straight on but the camera was tilted on its side on a tripod.

3. The text on the extinguisher label is small and this was taken at a distance of approximately 20 feet.

4. The border color is not actually pink but a sampled color off either the extingisher or the red background, I can't remember. Then I set opacity to 30%. On my screen it looks red so maybe color space or gamma is different on others' monitors. That's the only explanation I can come up with at the moment.

People seemed about 50/50 on the darkness I gave this photo. I chose to darken a bit because the texture just wasn't there with the default levels. I think if I left levels as is, people would comment that it was overexposed. I used all natural light and the light was actually green since the skylight above the area has green glass. This was taken around 5pm which explains the length and intensity of the shadows.

I really enjoyed reading all the comments everyone left and thanks again! :)

There's a journalistic starkness to this photo. My first impression was that it was sort of dull and without focus, but on second thought, I like the contrast of the bright red on white background and the subtle shading in the top corner and around the fire extinguisher.

too far right. th bricks need a little perspective adjustment on the left. the frame is really not a good color at all..red might have been OK (NONE IS BETTER pass the word) but this rose pink was not a good choice.

One of those simple but very effective images..which means it`s been done right !!
The lighting is all important in this type of work and I think you have got it perfect.
Compositionally, I might have tried bringing the extinguisher in towards the centre ..just a touch..but that`s being trivial and will assume that you tried that and it looks better this way ?
Well done

I like this. I would like the lighting to be a bit brighter in the top left hand corner. But the shadows on the extinguisher are great, they must stay :-)

This was only one of two 10s i awarded this week. For something seemingly simple, i found the image very striking and particularly appealing. the red is very bold and the lighting from the side is very effective. The white walls are brilliantly bare, and quite frankly, the whole thing is a joy to behold. I have a tiniest slight reservation about the sign, but that can't really be helped, and the way you cropped it makes the sign not very overbearing. very excellent picture.

The perspective is a bit off, should have been shot from straight on, I think.

Nicely done with the negative space.
The detail, focus lightings also great. but it is not that interesting as an image in itself to me. 7

I like the texture of the wall
not sure about extinguisher
maybe different angle shot could improve it

don't care for the pink border. I think a light from the left would have helped too.

I like the use of negative space. I think it gives your pic impact. It it a little out of focus but that might be on purpose or my eyes, lol. Good job!

You took something ordinary and made it extraordinary. Nicely done.

Like this, like the simplicity of it, and the progression of light across the wall's bricks. On thing I would change would be to sorrect the perspective distortion, or to shoot head-on in the first place - that slight coming together of the lines of bricks across the frame produces an odd feeling of unevenness across the image, and it isn't what i sense this shot is about.

Other than the harsh shadows off the extinguisher I like this shot.

I really like the composition on this. The image seems to be a bit dark. Possibly use of a bounce flash might help.

i love the composition and the texture. i'd say you'll get mailed by most for too much negative space and for the border. i like the neg space here, and though i'd rather see it without the border it doesn't do anything to bring down my score here. the shadow is a tad long though.

I like the repeating horizontal patterns of the brick in contrast to the vertical of the extinguisher mounting. Nice composition. I would just like to see the lines of the wall straighter. 7
