Thanks to all the commenters.
Well, this actually did much better than I expected it to. I had been playing with exposure settings instead of just taking the shot, and I ran out of daylight. This was taken too late in the day for a crisp image, and resulted in needed a bit more light than what was available -- and all I had to use was the on-camera flash. This photo was the best of the bunch composition-wise, but it was not good in contrast and since I am even less experienced with photoshop than I am with my camera I over did it on a number of things. I over sharpened for one, and in an effort to handle the poor lighting I added a lot of noise. Trying to use NeatImage to handle the noise resulted in the loss of nearly all texture.
The nest: yes it was placed -- but I did find it on another of these things (I may live in a farming community, but a farmer I am not). Unfortunately, the nest had been abandoned for a couple of days, and the weather during the taking of the photo and the previous day were much too cold for the eggs to be on there own. Had it been an active nest I would have used a ladder or something to get up to the level, but since it was abandoned I moved it to a similar place with other rusting farm machinery that I could climb up onto. So, while it was placed for the photo, it was actually in such a place to begin with.
Again, thanks to those who commented.

Looks like this might be a bit oversharpened, and the shadows in the background are a little distracting. The lighting seems a bit too bright on the nest, almost washing it out. Ignoring the technical nit-picks though, it is a great "memory" shot, if not as much an artistic one. These robins will have the most secure nest in the neighborhood. |

The on-camera flash really flattens the subject. |

Great idea, great title and great shot. Love the DOF making the nest crisp and the background blurred. |

Orange and blue go nicely together. I would have liked to see the background more out of focus. |

unfortunately for me the nest looks "placed" but it meets the challenge and is crisp and clean |

Odd to find a nest in such a place! I think the contrast could be better--perhaps the flash (?) flattened this out too much? Interesting nonetheless. |

Looks like a little too much fill flash. Interesting find. |

I like the thematic element of this shot. What is that saying? "Something old, something new.
Something borrowed and something blue." just a thought.... |
