 I thought about this challenge for a while, and finally decided that I would enter something...

This turned out to be an interesting shoot. I had the backdrop taped to the wall, and just above the backdrop is the strobe light. I used a home-made snoot made out of the same backdrop to direct the light at the model, which happens to be my dad.

In the end, this is the one I decided to work on and submit, and hopefully it doesn't do too bad in this challenge.

Shot RAW and did most of my editing through Lightroom. The process was:

-Up recovery by a bit
-Add fill light
-Up the blacks
-Decrease brightness
-Up the contrast
-Up clarity and decrease saturation, while maintaining a little bit of vibrance.

Then took it into Photoshop and gave it an unsharp mask, crop, and finally saved for web.

what is being backlit, cause it seems as if the light is coming in from the top

I love the outline of light on the hat and face, as well as the way it highlights the character in the hands. Very moody. One thing that could have been cool would be to include a lit cigarette in his mouth. Backlit smoke could really add to the atmosphere (of course this would be silly if this piano player doesn't smoke, but it it's a model, it would add to the mood.) One of my favorites so far!
