In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
— Lt.-Col. John McCrae
They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
The Red Challenge fell on the week of Rememberence Day here in Australia, a day second only to ANZAC Day (April 25th) in terms of Honouring those who have Fought for our Country. The Photo was taken on Rememberance Day, the 11th of November.
This Memorial of Crosses is a Temporary set-up on one of the Forecourt Lawns at the Shrine of Rememberance in Melbourne. This has been set up to Remember the Men and Women lost when HMAS Sydney was sunk in WWII. The Sydney wreck was finally found a few months ago off the Australian Coast. Each Cross bears the name of one of the 645 crew that lost their lives. There were no survivors.
