 a couple of drops of liquid soap in a glass. Red and Purple card background. Lit with 2 flash guns.


For those of you that asked this was real simple. Just add the smallest amount of dishwashing liquid to a glass of water and stir. Let is settle and use a paper towel to remove the excess bubbles. Then arrange a couple of pieces of card behind the glass.

The lens I chose (MPE-65) allows for 5 times life size, so the bubbles I chose were so tiny that the water surface didn't show in frame. The largest bubble you see here is probably less than 1mm, maybe even 0.5mm
Depth of field is next to zero, but thats ok because all the bubbles are more or less in a flat plane.

gaussian blur to background to soften it further and to get rid of a few streaks on the glass - used mask to bring the bubbles through from the sharpened layer

It's a mystery to me how so many nondescript "bubble" pics do well on this site. HOWEVER, yours is far from nondescript and yet, astoundingly, hasn't done as well. The reassuring thing is that, reading through the comments, I see that some of the site's 'big guns' have taken time to give it a considered appraisal. Need I say more?

Really cool effect. I did something similar in the Puzzle Macro challenge, but this is much, much better. :)

I think a horizontal flip would help this image as most people view an image from left to right
if you start on the left you only get halfway across the image before the large sphere grabs your attention which starts you jumping around the image without any flow
while the other way you would start on the big sphere and could move across or back into the photo giving both flow and depth
(I had to flip my entry for the same reason)

Fascinating - the sizes make you think that they're on a z axis plane, but the dof argues that they can't possibly be...

I like it. Great abstract and colors. Might have pushed them a bit far on the upper half. I got pixellation on my screen at the juxtaposition of the orange and purple. 7
