My lighting set up was so simple as I had traveled to Utah from Seattle to photograph my grand niece and nephew. First of all, the backdrop is a piece of navy blue cotton velvet. It's so dark, it was hard to tell if it was black or blue and since the fabric store was out of black, I figured this would work.
I used my Nikon SB800 as a remote flash on lightstand above and to the right of Ivy, There was some window light coming from the left but not much. The SB800 was also inside a brolly box. A softbox in umbrella form that makes it easier to transport. There is a whole series of photos I took with this same setup that I will probably be adding shortly. Brolly Box I used
My camera setting was used to under expose by 1/3 stop and just an slight adjustment on the RAW file got these results.
Next time I do this though, I would use some sort of light source as a hair light, perhaps just a reflector. This photo of my nephew shows a hair light would have really helped here.
Thanks for the compliments! |

I, too, was struck by the lighting. It is perfectly balanced. Terrific exposure. Oh yeah, sweet subject, too. :-) |
