Overall, this isn't a bad shot and I would expect it to do pretty well in a "games" challenge. The focus is solid, the colors bright and cheery, the composition pretty solid and the theme well thought out.

But, I really think 'play' to DPC voters meant action and activity. The top shots showed a person or persons doing something active (spinning, flying a kite, etc). Using a macro here for an active term such as play or work was likely to get lower votes.

Actually, I prefer your image to the kitten behind bars image, but some voters are suckers for cute animal pics. I tend to favor dogs, myself.

As for reasons why your scored "low," I can make a few guesses. There are several photos like yours -- close-ups of boardgame pieces -- that scored around the same as your entry, so it might be the subject. I think plastic is an ugly material and therefore difficult to photograph in an appealing way. Technically speaking there's some glare on the car and on the game pegs, and on the gameboard there's a very strange smudged-looking dark area where the blue meets the yellow road.

I didn't vote on this, but I would not have voted lower than a 5 for it and probably would have given it a 6.

I like all the different colours, the image seems a little too cropped in for me but only by a little. Maybe a lower angle to make me feel like I'm in the game rather than looking at it and maybe shot in landscape would have worked a little better ... maybe not. There does appear to be a slight blue cast but it doesn't really bother me much. I like the shallow DOF to the background but would have preferred the focus point to be just slightly further forward so the front of the car was sharper.

My first question would be what you expected for a score with this shot. Technically, there is nothing glaringly wrong with the shot. So I doubt you will get lots of comments giving you technical changes. I did not vote in this challenge but would have given this a 5 or a 4 if I would have voted. The reasoning for me is fairly simple. The shot is a snapshot. What draws my eye to this photo? What makes it stand out? What makes it dramatic? My answer is nothing. That doesn't mean it is a bad shot. I already stated technically the photo is very good. I think you did exactly what you wanted with the photo. That being said there is no story, no drama, and nothing that would make me remember the photo. Since you mentioned other game photos take a look at the monopoly one for contrast. Utilization of DOF, and toning make that a very dramatic and eye catching photo and that makes all the difference. Don't get discouraged the shot is very well done it just didn't have that pop and wow factor to score well.

The shot itself isn't at all bad... remember that DPC voters are very fickle... that siad, I do think your WB is a bit off, and I might have like an angle tha showed a bit more of the board... I think though that you did not to badly.

I think it might have something to do with color depth. I think your DOF here is appropriate. It almost seems like it needs more contrast (though I see you added +8) and saturation to give it some pop. I think the color temperature may be a little on the cooler side (blue cast). Try messing around with WB if you shot RAW. Compositionwise, there's something about the top half that I can't pinpoint. I really think it's the blue cast and that there are a light of brighter areas, ie. the histogram is right-heavy. I hope that was helpful.
