Taken as promotional material for a play, Moatarm's Otters. The actor and prop are the ones used in the play itself, although this scene never actually takes place. It's a rather obvious homage to Pulp Fiction and the golden-light-from-the-unseen-contents-of-the-briefcase scene, as in the play the contents of the suitcase are never revealed but only guessed at.
Quite a clumsy implementation of the idea, as this was shot in rehearsal space during a brief break. The ambient lighting is provided by a flash on a tripod with an umbrella up and to the left, while the main light (set 3 stops over the ambient) is from a second flash inside the suitcase lid, pointing down at a scrunched up golden reflector. Black background behind is barely visible due to the rapid falloff of my closely positioned flash, which is as it should be, although it doesn't give much chance to set the scene. The subject is a little too isolated in the shot, in retrospect.
The light isn't as obviously golden as i'd have liked, as there's no real unlit ambient subject to contrast it with, and the gold also unfortunately gets lost in the warm colour of the wooden floor. The point of the ambient light may not seem obvious, but it helps to define the suitcase (without it, the foreground would just be black) and gives a tiny splash of non-gold light to the back of the shirt - nowhere near obvious enough though i'm afraid.
Editing: cloning out of dust spots and scuff marks on the wood floor, a bit of dodging and burning to control contrasts, resize, sharpen. |

I think a softer light source would have helped this image. As it is, the shadows are very sharp, and the highlights are blown out. |
