Challenge: Free Study 2008-08 (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Lens: Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Canon
Location: North end Lake Galena
Date: Aug 25, 2008
Aperture: 8.0
ISO: 400
Shutter: 30
Galleries: Sky, Astrophotography
Date Uploaded: Aug 27, 2008

Captured without a release cable, self-timer enabled to prevent vibration, on a clear moonless night with some low lying cloud cover.

Title was taken from The Night Sky by Peter Roth. "We
are adrift in an ocean of stars, a shoreless ocean of unknowable depths, a vastness so great, it swallows all mind and all knowledge."

Most interesting of all was the discovery of all the different colors in the stars during post processing. I looked it up in Discover Magazine online and here's what it said. "..any time of the year you can find colors in the sky. Most stars look white, but the brightest ones show color. Red, orange, yellow, blue… almost all the colors of the rainbow."

PP: Crop, auto levels, hue/sat, USM, sharpen, additional levels, Neat Image.
Dodge tool and sharpen tool set at 100% hardness were used to brighten stars in sky and star reflections in water. Some stray twigs were cloned out along the bottom right border and a small light/reflection along the treeline was cloned out. Everything else was left as is, no stars were added or removed.

This is quite lovely. Can you tell us how soon after sunset it was taken and what direction you were facing?

Busted...You gotta find a new hide-out!

How do you do it! With no moon? I only get BLACK when I try to capture stars on a moonless night. Sigh. This is so stunning as always!

Dij-e-foto this in Pennsyljovania? Pretty tough to avoid noise with this type of shot. I kinda like the smooth look that noise reduction programs cause.

Very pretty scene. Some of the stars and their reflections look oversharp (a bit pixellated) but still very nice overall.

It's an amazing setting... but it suffers a hair from the noise reduction, has a bit of a "plastic" feel to it. regardless, one of the better shots in this challenge.

You have used only a third of the potential file size (your image is 72k, you can use up to 200k for a Free Study). The image is hurt by the JPEG artifacts and pixel smears. Otherwise, it's a great scene and well exposed.

Nice capture, there seems to be some nasty "artifacts" in the lower sky

The basic image looks good, I don't like the stars at all though

those are big stars! I've always tried to get the stars-reflected-in-lake photo but without much success. Very calming and nice photo 9
