I teach algebra to adults and they are sooooooooo happy to be in my classroom. They loooooooooove math (so they tell me). Just writing this stuff down in case one of them should ever stumble across this page. :D

The idea for this stemmed from this question that I always get: When will I ever use this stuff? And I thought that the variable X must certainly feel dejected over the lack of love. So here we have a sad little variable. If this is too weird for you, my apologies. That's just how my brain works. :P

You know, I always asked that same question about algebra until I got to calculus. My calculus instructor always said that the biggest problem in teaching it was that people forgot their algebra.

Wonderful germ of an idea for this shot and executed so well - choice of lighting underscores poor little x's loneliness excellently.

x=2x=x^2

Great concept and you pulled it off wonderfully.

Love the idea, the title, and the photo. Terrific lighting, with the clear X shadow. I like the way you tilted the wooden X. And I like the simplicity of the composition.

It's my personal favorite as far as variables go. X is HUGE. The signature powerhouse of variables. Y can hang, but it's not quite X (unless of course they solve to be equal). And those a, b, c variables? Mere shadows of the venerable X. This was in my top five - and after I saw you had a good score, I went back to my top five and figured this one was yours. Lovely work!

Excellent. Simple, to the point, but with depth and texture and al that good stuff.

Good lighting used. I like the composition as the object reminds me of one of those impossible shapes optical illusions.

...but there will be a result! Excellent pic. I would have tried to eliminate the table edge with a little PS for a spotlight effect.
9 Best of luck. Scott

I wish I could see more detail in the shadows of the cross. Nice and simple with good composition though.
