Really love the slight desaturation, it adds a whole lot to the shot, love her expression, also a nice composition. |

Greetings from the Critique Club!
Nice to "meet" you Kali.
What can I say about this shot? It's fantastic. How come you didn't get DQ'd when you submit your info? *shrug* Strange.
Anyways - congrats on the purple ribbon. I don't think there's much to critique here. Maybe the top center of the photo is a tad overexposed? Maybe the real problem is that I didn't take this photo? :)
Good job and continued good luck!

Hi Kali, let me congratulate you on the "purple ribbon" and a great shot. You are a great example for that it's not always the camera, but the photographer and imagination what makes a good photo. I love all the negative space you have included here, and the expressions on the girl's face. Way to gooo! :-) |

Hi Everybody!
YAY I made the top 5 :)
Some sad news is that I didn't have my date / time set within my camera for this very "Serendipitous" shot. So of course I will be disqualified. Oh well... at least I know I'm getting better at pleasing the very picky DPC crowd and that it is possible for me to reach the top 10 even with my little point and shoot.
Thanks for all the wonderful... and not so wonderful comments.
PLEASE make sure you're date/time is set within your camera!
Aloha!

This image works overall, despite some focus problems. By placing the subject in the upper right corner and cropping out any distracting details, the photograhper shows they know their stuff. It really works on a compositional level. It looks as though the photographer was trying hard to get the relfection in sharp focus and overlooked the fact that the girls face and most of her jacket were out of focus. I can't help feel an opportunity was lost when they photographer failed to make the contrast of the red of her jacket and the wet blacktop the main focus. My choice would have been to sacrifice some loss of sharpness in the reflection for more focus on the girl's face. The girl's expression, the sharp contrast of the black-and-white polka dot boots and the swirls in the reflection almost make up for it. Overall, this is the best I've seen so far and I would like to see more by this photographer. Kudos! |

This really was serendipity to get this shot. I'm sure you couldn't have directed her to pose that way. I like the raindrops and the reflection, and especially the look on her face. 10 |

I don't know whether you've desaturated part of the imge to get this effect or not - but it REALLY WORKS! The composition is great - although I initially thought I'd tell you to crop some from the left. Bottom line - one of the the best submissions.

that expression! you've captured the moment here. One of my ribbon picks. Suggestions for improvement?? - light spot a top center detracts my eye a bit from the main subject -- not sure what darkening the image would do to the raindrops?? |

Love this idea for this photo, the colours on the girl's coat contrast wonderfully on the grey of the tarmac and her being off centre in the frame works well. The facial expression is superb and I think the serendipity is met by the girl taking pleasure in something we would normally find depressing.
The two negatives I have is thay it is hard to tell on a small image but the girl does not appear to be pin sharp and the large shadow surrouding her (Is it the photograher's?) is distracting. |

This has a peaceful, more indirect, and more definite sense of serendipity than the other photos here. It works very well. Thanks for not putting a paragraph into your title to explain it! It takes a little longer to sense it, but it makes you appreciate the photo tons more. |

I like the concept of this shot quite a bit and the colors. The child's face looks like a doll - the contrast is a little too great - though the muted dreamy/nostalgia colors work well. The composition is nice, with the line of the puddle pointing to the girl and the large expanse of raindrops. |

great picture, one of the few I'm looking at and considered a very natural example of serendipity...I'm a sharpness freak, but I think the slight blur lends itself well to this picture. I almost see here swaying and really moving to enjoy the rain. Great. That expression captures the moment. |

I don't know how serendipitous this is, but I really like the photograph. I could see this as one of those "human interest" photos in a daily paper. I do like the use of negative space. Nice capture. |

I like how the red rain coat stands out from the rest of the photo. Good framing and I like the shadow that appears under her feet. I would have given it an even highter score if the jacket had bit a bit sharper. Great shot. |

Wonderful color treatment. Amazing to catch the raindrops just so. Pointing out the obvious: some blur on her cost. Too much negative space for me - she's gourgeous and should be focused on, plus you're getting more bang for the buck on the raindrops around her shadow. In my top 5, easily (8) |

It's in my top 15 even though the subject seems a little out of focus . It has power and emotion and that makes up for any technical flaws in my opinion. Good Luck |

Let me explain why I would vote high on this one. The expression on this tiny soul̢۪s face is totally cute as she discovers something else that is totally cool. Even if a photographer might set this up or wait all day to capture this shot, for me it would be serendipitous if I just happened to walk by as she did this, because it would make my day wonderful, and that could be what the author is saying. |
