 This is my first entry into the competition. Mathematics was a pretty abstract idea for a photo for me, so I Googled mathematics and poked around a few sites looking for ideas. I saw that someone had likened a Rubik's Cube to algebra, and there was my idea.

The set up was pretty simple. My girlfriend had some spare fabric from some pillows she had made laying around, so that was my base and backdrop, and the lighting was actually just my SB-600 set to 85mm, and hand held quite close to the subject to reduce the amount of light projected into the rest of the shot. I wanted all the focus to be on the Rubik's Cube.

I did a couple hue adjustments in PS,and then a USM on the exported JPEG.

Indeed! I think a group of permutations or function compositions or something (it's been a while) is sufficient to model it. Love the lighting here. A seven for you.

Great idea. I think the shot would have worked better though if more of the cube was visible.

Nicely done. Shame you didn't solve the puzzle first ;)
If you were a bit closer to the cube this might look better.
