I don't think it was just the foil background that hurt the score. A few other observations;
- Centered composition. In most cases centering the subject looks boring. Try a rule-of-thirds composition
- Boring subject. To be honest, there's not much you could do to make this item look interesting. It looks like something you just found in a desk drawer 5 minutes before the submission time. It just doesn't hold my interest or tell any sort of story.
- Subject too small in frame. Try moving in closer to the subject, or at least cropping out all that empty space around it.
As far as backdrops go, try using a large sheet of white or coloured paper. For example;
That's a sheet of red card I bought in Easons. It doesn't detract from the subject, but creates a contrasting colour for the background. Just be careful with your lighting when using white backdrops, you want to avoid weird shadows appearing. |

a macro is an interesting take on the challenge but the foil really clutters up the image for the viewer |

The subject is ugly, the kitchen foil doesn't really help in anything. |

Not a very interesting subject but you have made it appealing with your composition. Good job. |

I can see what you want to do here, but there is too much going on with the foil bg, it detracts. It would've worked much better a lot closer up. |

So, is that a dream job? I don't have the patience for elaborate computer games, myself. I like to spend 5 minutes blasting a few aliens and be done.
Not really thrilled with this shot, I'm afraid. Though I realize they represent video game inputs, The RCA jacks don't convey much to me or hold my interest, and there's a yellowish cast to the image. The foil does not do much either. It does not seem to be related to either the title or the object. |

I don't care for the foil type background at all, I find this very distracting |
