Greetings from the Critique Club!

Hi Art!

DPC and "art" don't really belong together. It's a good site to learn some cool stock photography ideas, though. Now ya know, as JPR said.

As far as the image itself, if you're going to clean it up, why not go all the way and clean the rest of the brightest spots? It seems speckled in some places it should not be. The composition and lighting are great and I hope you continue to submit interesting shots.

This was my first entry a the DPChallange, so I read the requirements of Advance Editing and the description of the theme (...take a photo that has a silhouette as part of your composition) My original shot is below.

I underexposed it to pull out more of the silhouette of the dogs muzzle, chest and front leg, then corrected the contrast, added a little bit texture and cropped it. Did I change it a lot? I chose this shot because I liked the composition created by the dog's body and its shadow. I like the paint texture I created. In my opinion it gives softer and more artistic sensation. I was pretty disappointed at the beginning with the low score, but after reading some discussions on the forums I realized that my definition of photography was much broader then generally accepted on DPChallenge. I understand that some people don't like dogs or effects applied, but discussion about integrity of the photograph is valid only if one can see the original picture, otherwise it is only gossip. My judgment of a photograph, at first is based on the emotions I feel are being portrayed, then I analyze the composition, color and technical characteristics of the work. Additionally, if it is a contest on a particular topic, like on the DPChallenge, it is important to adhere to the subject.
So far I have enjoyed the site a lot. Thank you for taking your time to read this and for all your comments. I hope to learn a lot here.
Cheers,
Art

This is great. Don't need to tell you why you scored so low. You now know not to submit this kind of thing to challenges. Adding this to my favorites.

Great effect on this shot. From my point of view I see this more as a shadow than a silhouette. The only real difference is whether I'm stading in the subject's shadow or off to the side but here it just doesn't seem to me to be a silhouette. Love the shot, though.

Very nice colors and tones here. I love the placement of the dog in the frame--and its shadow. It looks very processed. If you look closely, you can see a little grid pattern from the pixels, which may indicate doing to much to it or cropping/enlarging it too much.

With this effect, I always have a feeling it's been done to cover up a technically flawed picture. Don't know if that's the case here, can't judge that with the excessive filter.

not a true backlit silhouette, but a pleasing image nonetheless

You'll catch grief from the "purists" but I just love this. Hardly anyone here will jump out with an abstract. I think this is very well done. The only thing that dropped my vote from a 10 were the few artifacts that are mostly white-ish on the pups back. And one rather bright artifact on the shadow at about the left ear. I know I'm being an extreme critic, here, but why not... I feel this is sellable work. This image REALLY works for me. Heck, I changed it to a 10... just can't help myself. Do be aware of removing or softening those few bright artifacts, though. I hope your RAW image has enough pixels to take this to 8x10 prints.... it's awesome.

This has a very different effect almost like an oil painting
I see this as a shadow not a silhouette I like it though its just very unusual

I think you'll find a lot of people voting badly on this one given the current digital effects backlash. I think it's very creative using a shadow as a silhouette but I can't understand why you've applied these unnecessary effects. I would say that photographic integrity has been violated here. Shame, as I like the composition.

This is a beautiful image. I love the warmth of the light and the strength of the shadow. Unfortunately, it doesn't really feel like 'photography' to me. The resulting image may be based in photography, but it has moved beyond it into a realm of some other form of art.

This is one of my favorites. The composition is great! You captured the silhouette, but the texture is outstanding. If you get a chance to email me I would love to know how you did this!!! Great job 9!!

Definitely a more about shadows than silhouettes but a very nice paint effect nevertheless.

Painterly affect is okay, but a bit over done for my taste. I don't dislike it totally.

The textured effect really adds interest; however the white spots in the print are distracting.

This is a nice bit of art, but it is not really a photograph after all that you have done to it. I looks more like an oil painting. There is nothing wrong with that other then this is a photo challenge.

Nice painterly feel - shadow is a very strong part of the image. Face silhouette meets the challenge. There may be a bit too much manipulation for most DPCer's tastes.

Works as a "shadow" challenge. Without the special effects, the silhouette of the dog's face would work well in this challenge.

A picture of a dog and his shadow run through "art" filters or whatever isn't a silhouette IMHO. Only fair to say why I gave it a 1.

This is an emotive image with really good muted colouring..however, with the current "knifes out" approach to digital art, I don`t expect it will be scoring well which is a pity.

This thing has either had a photoshop filter applied to it to turn it into an artwork (but this is all about photography, and hence fails in my eyes, and I would give it a 2, for your effort) or your camera takes pictures of a horribly bad technical quality (again, 2). Sorry.
04/19/2004 03:35:53 AM
Just because you are allowed to use filters, doesn't necesarilly mean you should.

Sorry I just don't like this at all, thats before I een start considering if it really is a silhouette.....

Not a silhouette and oil effect just highlights this
