Challenge: Silhouettes (Advanced Editing I)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Lens: Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX Aspherical DG for Canon
Location: Hickory, North Carolina
Date: Apr 17, 2004
Aperture: f/22
ISO: ISO 200
Shutter: 1/750

Date Uploaded: Apr 17, 2004

I went to the skate park today with my camera. These kids couldn't wait to have their photos made... The guy in this photo was pretty good. He could do all sorts of tricks.

The sun was low enough in the sky that I could get this 'sun star' effect in this composition. The sun star is achieved by shooting at minimum aperture size. I also underexposed this meter reading by two stops to get the silhouette.

Post Processing:

I cloned out a jet trail, some lens flare, some sensor spots... cropped to square, resized and added the border. No sharpening or level adjustments...

Great one John. Gave this a 10. It's a fantastic photo for the challenge and it has special appeal to me because I used to be an avid skateboarder.

Now that is very well timed.

I like it :) I think cropping it just above the ramp so all you can see is the skater, the sun, and the sky would also work well.

this is pretty rad, one of my favorites. i can't decide if i would have just cropped out the rail completely and left him ollie-ing against the sun. :) nice work.

One of the best in show. The stop motion, the silouette, the lens flare, and your positioning are all just great. I might try to lighten the sky just a bit to to a bit more definition to the upper body and head of your subject. A really great shot! 8

I like this shot. I only wish that the sun was not so distrating and that you added a bit more contrast to the silo of the cool cat skateboarding. 7

Great timing in this photo! Works well here!

wow great capture I tried something similar a while back and it was really hard to to so well done

Superb shot, but I wonder if your monitor is calibrated badly. I feel your gamma should be a lot higher so the skateboarder's head stands out from the sky more. Great sun flare. Good composition. Excellent timing.

Dynamic ! Well composed. Great lighting. Shame for the lend glare reflections. 9

Lovely.

It's tough getting an image when you're also shooting the sun straight on. This is a great shot, but do use care. Looking at the sun through your camera can cause eye damage. Not worth even the most special photograph for! 8

I like it as is, but I wonder about a fraction earlier timing - so that the person would have been blocking the sun and rim lit

Wow, what a great silhouette picture for this challenge!

Nice capture! Nice contrast and nice timing. The figure has an almost alien appearance / shape to him :-) solidified by the wearing of the helmet.

Your subject is too dark, hard to tell what it is.
04/19/2004 11:34:38 AM
Nice placement of the main subject. Sun a bit bright and the lens flare detracts a bit. Don't like the thin white border line.
04/19/2004 10:22:35 AM
Crop above the structure and you have a perfect image.

Cleverly captured and the sun well positioned too but his pose doesn't really appeal to me. His arms are too close to his body and look kind of strange.
