The dahlia garden in Golden Gate Park is just lovely right now, and I spent a pleasant hour or so over there this afternoon. Morning would have been better as the wind picked up and I had to chase the flowers around a bit.

Here's a dahlia detail to start off the month.

I've been doing some experimenting with duplicate layer>filter>stylize>find edges, then using a blending mode (usually linear burn) which sometimes accentuates the edges without becoming overpowering.
It seemed to work pretty well on this one.

Note: bassbone hit the nail on the head. I was so interested in preserving the detail of the center section, that I failed to notice the two points of dark green at the top edges. Now, I see they are obtrusive (IMO) and a lower crop would have been far better, even at the risk of losing the full detail of the center. His suggestion would concentrate the image on the best parts of the image.

I love the softness of this.

I love how you've processed this shot - looks almost velvety

This is stunning! The petals look so creamy smooth yet the image is incredibly sharp! Thanks for providing some info on your PP - I will definitely give this filter a try...

This is going to be one heck of a side challenge ;)

I love the surreal 3-d feel of the dahlia. Beautiful image. I'll have to try your technique.

Interesting point (bassbone)made and good eye to see that. I'm simply in awe of the detail in your image and like the outer shades as gives depth to the inner aspects..
Very well done..

I like the smooth transition of pink to yellow at the top, and that seems fairly sharp. I'm wondering though about the black halo in the lower half.

I'll be taking many dahlia's this month as I have lots in my backyard.

Lovely shot, great colours and detail. I have some Dahlias in my garden, but haven't found the perfect shot yet.

I thought it looked a little oversharpened at first. But then read your comments. I will have to try that myself too.
I would crop off the top to bring your eye into the center more. Lovely light and colors.

I love dahlias, I bet you went click happy in the gardens!
To bad I don't live close, I would love to visit that garden.

Someday I'm going to incorporate some Dahlias into my garden. I really love the texture they so delicately show off.

This shot is begging for a square crop to me, mainly to get rid of the top bit that doesn't do much for the whole... and black and white, but that could just be a personal phase. The accentuated edges make it look like a pastel painting.

Very nice shot. The detail in it is great, and so is the color.

I really love the effect you have achieved with the processing. It is very nice indeed. As for the green bits, I don't find them obtrusive at all.

The color is so soft, but also quite sensuous, and so appealing.

I agree that a tighter crop would make this really 'POP'.

The clarity, focus, and color, all work a treat for me, and thank you for sharing this awesome floral image with us.

The journey has begun.....

Love the detail on the edging! Wonderful color to this!

Huh; never tried a technique like that. It really does create a surreal effect, particularly towards the bottom where it so sharply defines the petal edges. I'd probably crop a little tighter to show that off, too. Looking forward to seeing some more examples of this processing!

Oh very pretty, I really like the light in this.

I love how the light off the petals provides wonderful shadows on the petals beneath. It all delivers a very three dimensional feel to the bottom of the image. I wonder if a slightly different crop to emphasize the lower more dramatic lighting would give this even more of a boost

Ok sorry to rant but ..... At first I really liked the shot, then came a moment of not really sure what to make of the edit. So here i sit at work just kinda staring at your photo. So, if I'm taking this long to look at this photo it must be evoking something in me. It does. And I really like it. I love how the edges popout at me. I love the way it makes me feel like I'm really looking at a combination of a photograph and an oil painting. Thank you.

Soft. That's the first word that popped into my mind. Not as in soft focus though. Love the colours in this. It has an overall relaxing appeal.

Nice shot.
I was wondering how the edges of the petals came out so sharp until I read your comments. I'm going to have to try that.

I disagree with the too techy diagnosis. I really like how sharp it all is on the edges. Looks 'really unreal'. *grin*

I like the photo but I'm not too sure about the editing. I think a more subtle approach would have been better - it wouldn't seem so high tech then :)
(A high tech flower? Hmm... maybe you really did create it from scrap metal and broken wires and just painted it yellow and then used a whole lot of photoshopping on making it look real! Aha, I'm on to you...)
