It took a lot of work to get this shot. Creating the props took the longest. I collected ahuge appliance box from my local Lowes (thanks guys!), loaded it up into my tiny Honda Civic and carted it home. I cut a backer out of the box for the wing to mount the feathers on- then proceeded to cut out the feathers one-by-one, soak them briefly in water to release the adhesive and peel off the paper faces- just leaving the corrgation on one side- whew! Let em dry for 1/2 a day, then on to mounting with rubber cement- The finished product was worth it though!

cutlassdude70was my awesome and very patient model- standing through a couple of hours of alternately holding his arm with wing above his head (not easy for extended periods) and laying on the floor in my office with every scrap of black cloth(including my favorite dresses) underneath him.

Editing: Worked in LAB, did multiple curves and levels adjustment layers with masks to enhance the detail and place focus where I wanted it in the picture- Very Carravaggio-esque.

Hoping it does well! - Either way, comments- especially constructive criticism are very appreciated!

Thanks!

Wow! I am impressed with the amount of work and effort you put into this. Congradulations on creating such a wonderful photo. The level of detail in the wings (holy hannah you had a lot of patience with 'carving' those cardboard feathers), the pose, the expression of the models face -ALL- together is what makes this a fantastic composition. The lighting in this one is also very good for as Icarus 'falls' the darkness is decending upon him - at least that is the way I read the image. I am glad that your composition did not get slammed by the DNMC crowd. It would be nice if it had placed a little highter BUT you made it into the top 25% and earned over a 6 on the final score. Not to mention the most important thing: you created an image you should be very proud of.

What can I say this was one of the most lovely images in the challenge... you were robbed! But the reward is not a virtual ribbon it is knowing that you touched fellow photographers with your image and judging by the comments below you were quite successful on that score!

I love the concept on this shot. I am fascinated by the detail in the feathers. But I am afraid you might get dinged for the lack of a box.

Excellent idea and photo - kinda 'shoehornish' using the title to make it fit in.

I abso-frickin-lutley LOVE this! Easily the most creative use of cardboard in the entire bunch. This must have taken forrrrrrrrever!.

This is either going to ribbon or flail miserably, as it is definitely out-of-the-box (he, he pun intended.) I'm hoping for ribbon.

Beautiful. It's a *tiny* bit hard to see that the wings are cardboard but when I look and can see that they are, it then meets the challenge because you used a box to be creative! Didn't say it had to stay a box. Composition and lighting are very nice and this just seems to be a very lovely modern interpretation of the Icarus myth. Good job.

Very beautiful and serene image, thoughtful and provacative in that it made me think and dwell on it a while. One of the best in the challenge!

Well done and very creative, but I have to mark down a tad (one point) for not including a box. *sigh* I'm sorry. I think it's amazing how you've made the wings.
