After dinner tonight we went to the beach hoping to catch a decent sunset. Not much was happening although the radar was looking quite good for a storm. We went to check out the municipal band for a bit and then decided to try one more time. As we rounded the bandshell we got a glimpse of the sky. We moved much quicker to get back to the beach, and it was worth it.
The dark band to the left started behind the power where it was churning a bit and went clear across to the far end of the lake, behind where this was taken. It looked like a dark, gigantic snake (what I wouldn't have done to have a fisheye - that thing was nearly 180 deg in the sky). I went out to take a few pics while wickee_one checked the radar.
I started walking towards the lighthouse to get what I could quickly because the wind increased really fast (later found out it went from 25 knots to 35 in five minutes). I positioned myself in this spot and bracketed a few series as people were quickly coming in from the pier. I went back to the car where Amanda was waiting and consulted over the weather. We decided that it was a bit better so I figured I'd go down by the pier and get a few more.
I was walking quickly and about 3/4 of the way there it started to drizzle. The walkway here is about 2 blocks long. Time to run. Plop down camera, level as quickly as I can, and try to shelted the camera from the rain. Pick up camera and head back. Rain comes. Tuck camera under shirt (still on tripod) and run like hell back towards the car. Now I run on a regular basis but this wasn't easy. We had just eaten dinner and my stomach was very full. I managed to make it back before I hurled.
The shots I ran for? You'll see...

This picture is a wonderful capture. I can only imagine what you could have done with a fish eye lens. :oP I like the light and dark tones in the clouds and the brightness of the walkway. This has a calming yet stormy feel too. |

Fantastic sky, I can see why you named this excitement. Cloud and storms can cause several different types of excitement for different people. |

Great capture, Ken, and good story as well. Nothing like a good storm cloud to liven up the evening. |

Well that really must have been quite a nasty storm once it arrived. Hopefully you didn't get too wet. |

Ken's Further Adventures in Photography! Sorry about your dinner, but you got the shot. I've got the Canon 10mm-20mm and never get anything like this. Great processing, too.l |
