 ... powder commonly referred-to as "sugar."

Some sucrose (white sugar) and some old chemistry gear. Used the tripod and timer so I could hold the props myself. Went to a grainy blue-toned B&W look to try and give it that classic chem-lab feel ... these ingredients and tools could be used to make ethanol ... ;-)

-Supermacro mode, shutter-priority

-Channel Mixer > monochrome
-Blue Curve
-Resize
-Crop a few pixels from top and left to reduce file size
-USM at 12%/48 dia/TH = 0
-USM at 88%/0.8 dia/TH = 7
-SaveAs JPEG at quality 9/10 = 142kb

This is a pretty unique approach to the subject matter, the black and white with cranked up grain is a stong photojournalistic type of style which adds a lot of drama and interest to what could be an otherwise fairly dull shot. your composition is strong and the tilted angle adds to the image I think. I'm not sure about the object in the background though, with backgrounds its always helpful to think 'does this add anything to the image, and if so, does it add the right effect and fit in with the rest of the photo?'. In this case I'm not sure what the object is but I suspect it was added to add extra weight to the 'chemistry' element. Overall a strong entry I think, and a bit more risky than a typical 'colourful chemical' shot. 8 from me.

Sweet. Oh...and nice shot, too. A little mystery, good comp, nice tonal range. Next time just use a spoon. HA!

Sugar, I think I remember... The grain adds much to the image, along with the title you could think it's a shot from the early 20th century

this reminds me of the gold plating salts we use at work, wish I had thought of that sooner, could of been a good entry, like your composition
