 I like the "impact" of the hat, which is why I asked to shoot his photo. His face could have benefited from a fill flash or reflector as well, but I had neither with me. I'm submitting it for the comments, hopefully I will garner some advice! Probably will languish in the low 5s. Off to the crime scene!

I do not see high contrast (predominance of black and white with very few mid tones) in this.

this is a nice image, but i'm afraid it's not really a high contrast image. high contrast has a limited tonal range of high and low tones, with very few intermediate tones. the ultimate high contrast is pure black and white, no greys. the more greys or intermediate tones, the less high contrast it is.
